The Brief
Magnolia House dates to 1860 and is the oldest dwelling in Mullumbimby. Heritage restrictions in the development application initially limited the scope. Kick worked directly with council to have those constraints lifted, opening the way for a renovation that could genuinely improve the building while respecting its history.

The Main House
The primary residence received open-plan living areas, a kitchen extension, custom joinery and refurbished fireplaces. New external deck and roof structures were added. The renovation worked with the existing fabric rather than against it, preserving the character of a 160-year-old home while making it functional for contemporary life.
The Barn House
A separate two-bedroom Barn House was built using recycled materials: 120-year-old bridge timbers, hardwood VJ lining, charred spotted gum cladding and re-sawn hardwood sourced from a heritage building demolished in Brisbane's CBD. The result is a structure with material depth that new timber cannot replicate.
